Not sure whether your new car has a factory alarm system?

Not sure whether your new car has a factory alarm system? Here's a simple test to find out if your car has a factory alarm or just uses a factory remote for central locking.

If your car has a factory alarm system it will trigger (make a noise, such as the horn sounding) if a door (and sometimes the bonnet or boot) is opened. Usually this can be tested by opening a window and locking the car with the factory remote. Wait for a minute then unlock the car manually from inside and open the door. The alarm should sound.

If you do have a factory alarm system you can easily and cheaply upgrade your factory alarm with the AVS sensor range (such as shock sensors and glass break sensors) to increase the security of the system with the AVS Detector factory alarm expansion module. Learn more about the AVS Detector and what sensors you can add to your factory alarm with our AVS Detector page. Prices start from only RRP $249 installed* for the AVS Detector and a shock sensor.

If there is no sound it is likely your car only has a factory remote which lock/unlocks the doors. But no worries! The great thing with AVS is you can install a normal AVS car alarm and then operate it from your factory remote. This means when you lock/unlock the car with the factory remote it will arm/disarm the AVS alarm.

You can choose from the AVS Star Rated car alarm range (AVS A4, S3, S4, S5) which start from RRP $425 installed*. All of these car alarms can be operated from your car's factory remote via the in-built MAP feature. To learn more about this feature have a look at the Factory Upgrade or MAP car alarms entry on our jargon page.
